Senior Research Advisor (Mathematics and Computer Science)
IVADO is an interdisciplinary, cross-sector research, training and knowledge mobilization consortium whose mission is to build and promote robust, reasoned and responsible artificial intelligence. Led by Université de Montréal, with 4 university partners (Polytechnique Montréal, HEC Montréal, Université Laval and McGill University), IVADO brings together research centers, government and industry partners to co-construct ambitious cross-sector initiatives promoting a paradigm shift in AI and its adoption. IVADO has recently set up 10 thematic research clusters bringing together over 300 researchers. The senior advisor will work directly with the environment cluster on sustainable development and climate change mitigation/adaptation.

Your daily challenges
- Drive data engineering in AI applications related to climate change, sustainability and biodiversity.
- Understand and interpret data in this field and turn that into well-formatted data with code that enables one to input it into ML models.
- Liaise with stakeholders in fields relevant to climate change mitigation/adaptation, to guide the acquisition and use of data for ML applications.
- Investigate and transform data science prototypes, select appropriate datasets and representation methods, run ML benchmarks and experiments, and train systems.
- Perform data and statistical analysis, extend existing ML libraries and frameworks.
- Assist researchers, mentor and collaborate with postdocs and students.
What you need to succeed in this role
- Master’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization (computer science, software development, mathematics) and three (3) years of experience in the field of research or a doctoral degree in an appropriate field of specialization.
- A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience, or equivalent, as a data engineer and ML developer, along with experience in managing multidisciplinary projects, involving external and internal partners.
- Ability to write robust code in Python, with R or Julia a plus, familiarity with PyTorch and libraries like scikit-learn.
- Strong experience in software architecture/design, good development practices (testing, maintainability, code reviews, etc.), as well as the ability to act as a technical leader in software development.
- Some experience in various modalities of remote sensing data (such as multispectral and synthetic aperture radar recordings), time series data, and data from physical systems.
- Proficiency in French and English and excellent communication skills.

- Regular full-time position, for 35 hours per week. Term 2 years (with possibility of renewal).
