François Soumis – A Visionary Leader’s Passing

IVADO announces with deep sadness the passing of François Soumis, professor in the Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal, GERAD member, and founding director of IVADO (2014-2017). Professor Soumis possessed an extraordinary ability to transform complex mathematics into real-world solutions, guided by his core belief that research should serve the public good.

“François left an indelible mark during our work together,” recalls IVADO Executive Director Luc Vinet. “As GERAD director, he was instrumental in establishing both the rcm² Mathematical Modelling and Computation Network in 1995 and the MITACS Network of Centres of Excellence in 1998. A brilliant mind in both mathematics and computer science, François emerged as a global pioneer in operations research and a truly remarkable entrepreneur. He wove this spirit into IVADO’s very foundation, leaving us an invaluable legacy.”

A Pioneer in Operations Research

After earning his Ph.D. in computer science and operations research from the Université de Montréal in 1979, François devoted his career to bridging theoretical concepts with practical applications. His groundbreaking work in mathematical optimization transformed transportation management globally. In 1985, he launched AD OPT Technologies, which later merged with Kronos to become a cornerstone of Montréal’s digital innovation landscape – embodying his belief that academic research should drive both economic and social advancement.

As the NSERC chair in large-scale transportation systems optimization at Polytechnique Montréal (2001-2015), François developed revolutionary methods for schedule planning in aviation and urban transit.

His exceptional ability to connect academia with industry earned him prestigious recognition. He received Quebec’s highest innovation honour, the Lionel-Boulet Award, in 2014. Earlier, in 1997, he was awarded both the ACFAS Joseph-Armand Bombardier Medal and the NSERC Synergy Award. Throughout his career, he remained committed to his fundamental principle: research must benefit society.

Under his leadership, IVADO secured a landmark $93.6-million grant from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund in 2016, cementing Montréal’s position as a global leader in mathematical optimization.

François had an uncanny ability to spot potential – whether in mathematical equations or in people. While his academic impact is remarkable, with nearly 200 field-changing publications, his greatest legacy may be as a mentor. He guided over 200 graduate students, nurturing their ambitions whether they aimed for industry or academia.

François Soumis’s enduring impact lives on in how we approach research today – as a vital link between academic excellence and social progress. His generous spirit and passionate dedication continue to inspire all who knew him.
