IVADO and envisAGE: AI for Quality Aging

In a bright apartment in the city center, an older adult is testing a mobility monitoring device installed in their living room for the first time. Sensors measure their movements, detect loss of balance, and transmit the data to an artificial intelligence platform. This real world evaluation of technology in the community is the result of collaboration between envisAGE and IVADO.

The challenges associated with an aging population including fall prevention, frailty detection, and optimizing independence at home, require increasingly sophisticated data analysis and interpretation capabilities. The projects supported by envisAGE rely, among other things, on sensors, connected platforms, and real-time measurements, paving the way for high-impact AI innovations.

Today, artificial intelligence is an impressive tool, and we must ensure that it is integrated in a suitable and ethical manner. This is IVADO’s mission, an interdisciplinary and intersectoral consortium for research, training, knowledge transfer, and mobilization, and one of the five envisAGE innovation hubs whose mission is to build and promote robust, reasoning, and responsible artificial intelligence.

Led by the University de Montréal, with four university partners (Polytechnique Montréal, HEC Montréal, Université Laval, and McGill University), IVADO brings together research centers, government and industry partners to co-develop ambitious cross-sector initiatives that promote a paradigm shift and enhanced adoption of artificial intelligence.

“Artificial intelligence is transforming our society, and IVADO is ideally positioned to guide its evolution in an ethical, inclusive, and bold manner,” said Luc Vinet, Executive Director of IVADO. “We look forward to continuing to work with envisAGE,  SMEs and community partners to advance research, stimulate innovation, and train the talent that will shape the future.”

Moving from research to the field

Thanks to IVADO, Canadian entrepreneurs benefit from privileged access to expert resources in:

  • advanced data modeling and analysis,
  • development of responsible AI solutions,
  • methodologies for explainability and robustness,
  • valorization and transfer strategies to industry.

This expertise accelerates the transition from prototypes to concrete solutions that have been tested with older adults and can be deployed on a large scale—a key challenge for AgeTech innovation.

Improves everyday life through innovation and collaboration

Sentiom, Habitations Bordeleau, and IVADO aim to improve the safety and quality of services in older adults’ residences through an innovative technological solution as part of the Mance-AI project: an intelligent detection and alert solution that enhances the safety of older adults.

In the field, this translates into real-world testing, constant algorithm adjustments, and careful monitoring of the impact on the daily lives of older Canadians including greater independence, increased safety, and peace of mind for families and caregivers professionals.
