AI Deployment in Healthcare Settings: Perspectives from the IVADO Health Systems Cluster Panel

As AI transforms clinical and organizational practices, its safe, responsible, and sustainable deployment in healthcare settings poses a major challenge for the health system. On March 30, 2026, IVADO’s Health Systems Cluster held a panel on this topic as part of the Scientific Days of the Réseau santé numérique (RSN) at Université Laval.

The event brought together experts from academic and clinical fields to reflect on the conditions that allow AI to generate a real and beneficial impact for the entire healthcare system, its beneficiaries, and its professionals.

Intersecting Perspectives on AI in Healthcare

Discussions highlighted AI’s strong potential, but also the significant gap between scientific performance and clinical applicability. Major advances have been made, each within a well-defined scope where their performance has been proven. In healthcare, however, this does not necessarily mean they are generalizable to all contexts. The panelists distinguished two main categories:

  • Generative AI, easier to adopt and already beneficial in reducing administrative burdens and supporting clinical teams.
  • Diagnostic AI, subject to strict regulation, facing major challenges in integration and adoption despite strong performance.

The importance of anticipating regulatory, clinical, economic, resource, and acceptance issues from the outset was strongly emphasized. Discussions also stressed the sustainability of adopted tools and the need for a responsible, collective approach.

Where Science Meets Practice

Participants emphasized patient involvement, transparency in data use, strengthening internal expertise, and scaling solutions across the healthcare system. These elements are essential to maximize AI’s real impact, ensure its acceptability, and guarantee its contribution to high-quality, equitable care.

Contributions from panelists Audrey Durand, Robert Avram, An Tang, Maxime Sasseville, and Carl-Éric Aubin enriched the debate with their clinical and scientific experience, while moderator Yan Bertrand facilitated the discussion in a dynamic and relevant manner.

Towards Responsible and Sustainable Deployment

The panel reaffirmed the need for AI deployment in healthcare based on responsibility, collaboration, and pragmatic innovation. The discussions highlighted strategies to transform technological advances into concrete benefits for the population and the health network while respecting ethical and regulatory standards.

IVADO thanks the Réseau santé numérique (RSN) for this valuable opportunity for exchange and is pleased to have contributed to a collective reflection essential for the future of AI in healthcare in Québec.
