Francesco Ciari earned his MSc in environmental engineering at University of Florence in 2003. He then completed a dissertation in transportation planning in 2012, on the topic Sharing as a Key to Rethink Urban Mobility, at École Polytechnique Fédérale (ETH) in Zurich, where he worked as a senior researcher until 2017. He then joined Joanneum Research in Graz, Austria, spending two years as head of its Urban Living Lab research unit, from 2017 to 2018.
