Catherine Régis is appointed Co-Director of the CAISI Research Program

Montreal, December 12, 2024 – IVADO is proud to announce that Catherine Régis, Director of Social Innovation and International Policies at IVADO, has been appointed Co-Director of the Research Program at the new Canadian Institute for Artificial Intelligence Safety (ICSIA).

To better understand and mitigate the risks associated with advanced or misused AI systems, particularly to safeguard the most vulnerable communities, this new institute, whose creation was announced last November, will receive support from CIFAR, which will spearhead applied research projects within its framework.

Catherine Régis, a full professor at the Law Faculty of the Université de Montréal, is a leading expert in AI governance, safety, and responsible development. Her significant contributions include serving as Director of Social Innovation and International Policies at IVADO, holding a Canada-CIFAR AI Chair, co-chairing the Responsible AI Working Group for the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI), and being an associate academic member of Mila. These roles have earned her broad national and international acclaim in these key domains.

She will co-lead the research program alongside Nicolas Papernot, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, affiliated with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Department of Computer Science, and the Law Faculty, as well as an academic member of the Vector Institute.
