The future of AI will be robust, reasoning and responsible: Interview with Luc Vinet and Yoshua Bengio on the R³AI project

With the R3AI project, UdeM and IVADO promise to revolutionize the development of artificial intelligence. Utopian fantasy? More like a development perspective built on solid foundations. IVADO’s CEO, Luc Vinet, and Scientific Director, Yoshua Bengio, were invited by Université de Montréal’s Alumni Magazine to talk about the R3AI project.

Last spring, the IVADO consortium, spearheaded by Université de Montréal, received a $124.5 million grant from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund to change the face of artificial intelligence (AI). Nothing less. This major challenge is embodied in the R3AI project, which focuses on more robust, reasoning and responsible AI (the three Rs). The aim is to better meet the needs of communities by bridging the gap between artificial intelligence and human intelligence through interdisciplinary research teams.

This major initiative is led by UdeM in partnership with Polytechnique Montréal, HEC Montréal, Université Laval and McGill University, all united under the banner of IVADO, a consortium for research, training and knowledge mobilization in artificial intelligence.

In the UdeM Alumni Magazine, Luc Vinet, IVADO’s CEO, gives an overview of this project, which was developed with his partner Yoshua Bengio, IVADO’s Scientific Director and a professor in UdeM’s Department of Computer Science and Operations Research, who is currently one of the world’s most influential scientists.
